With a client list that includes members of the Royal Family and the most exclusive jewellery houses in London, including Asprey and Garrard, it is no surprise that Andrew Pitcairn is considered a master of his craft.
His journey in jewellery began with a five year apprenticeship in diamond mounting with a top British jeweller. He then went on to study jewellery design and manufacturing at London’s prestigious City of London University, where he later returned to lecture on his speciality subject, platinum.
Andrew worked as a master goldsmith in London for 30 years, before bringing his talents to his new hometown of Sydney ten years ago. He is now a member of the Guild of Gold and Silversmiths of Australia.
Speaking of his admiration for Faberge, who’s quality of workmanship and intricate design has long been a source of inspiration, Andrew says “I’m inspired to design and make pieces for clients which allow them to realise their dreams, using works of art as opposed to run-of-the-mill styles. It is the challenge of making the perfect piece of jewellery, a piece that everybody admires, that I truly love. I’m only as good as the last piece I’ve made.”
Andrew specializes in bespoke handmade one-off pieces, diamond suites, platinum jewellery and enjoys the challenge of designing anything that is “unusual or unique”. One of his most challenging commissions was a yellow sapphire and diamond suite set in platinum. It took 160 hours to make by hand, required 200 individually jointed diamond settings and the sapphires were collected over three years in order to achieve the perfect match in colour.
A key aspect of Andrew’s approach to his work is that he likes his customers to know about the product and materials he uses. Clients are shown how to use a loop to inspect the diamonds he offers for selection, so they can see for themselves the quality of the stone according to it’s grading.
“The more my clients know about jewellery the better”, he says, “Jewellery should not be a mystery. I believe clients should be able to feel the piece they purchase really has been their creation.”
